About two weeks ago, I was having lunch at Subway's, reading a novel as I often do while eating. The person sitting behind me came to my table and asked me if I enjoyed reading and what kind of book I liked to read. At the time I was reading a Baldacci mystery. This stranger strongly recommended Charles Martin as his favorite author. I had never heard of Martin, but this guy was such a fan I thought I would look into it, so I went to Amazon and read some of the titles and reviews. I downloaded "Water from my Heart" to my Kindle and just finished reading it.To me, the most striking thing about the book is how much of it is about goodness and hope. This is in itself unusual. Many books are about the struggle between good and evil. Most of those I read end up with the triumph of good, or at least hope, after much struggle and suffering. This is the classic "ad astra per aspera" (to the stars through suffering) theme so popular in literature and music, especially during the Romantic age.This is an entirely different approach, with long passages not on how difficult it is to stay good or hopeful, but how it is to live a life filled with these qualities of goodness and hope. That is what makes the book inspiring.Like others, I too had difficulty, at times, remembering what timeline I was reading about, but only for a few paragraphs. I was reminded of a phrase I once heard from Pope John XXIII: "C'e pane sotto la neve" (There is bread beneath the snow). This book is about the bread that lies beneath the snow in the form of seeds that must die before they bear fruit in the Spring. It is a beautiful love story, a complicated conversion from indifference to caring and a lesson about what is really important in life.I don't know who that person was who recommended this author to me or why he chose to do so, but he was truly a Good Samaritan. His kind deed has brought me many thoughtful hours of reading. Thanks. I read this book in one day, in fact I read this book through the night. I couldn't sleep not knowing what lay ahead for the characters, all of whom I came to care about. If I could give this a rating of '10' I would. I am an avid reader. Rarely does a book come along that meets all criteria across the board, a rich compelling story, incredible story telling, well developed characters, and a backdrop that sweeps you away. Water from My Heart had it all and then some. This is my first read by Mr. Martin. It will not be my last. This book is one of the best I've ever read, truly. And he manages to do all this without gratuitous sex, violence or vulgar language. Well done sir, well done!
