I read The Naturalist as part of an Amazon First choice and promptly decided to read more books by Andrew Mayne. I enjoyed Angel Killer (I am buying the sequel) but thought Angel Killer had quite a few dubious plot points. The writing is very strong and keeps the story moving at a rapid pace. I finished it in a day.Good:- Jessica Blackwood is an interesting character with interesting thoughts and backstory- Jessica is a strong, tough woman- Magic is fun!- Damian is charming and wickedBad:- Jessica seems somewhat stupid. Without Damian, Jessica and the FBI would not have figured anything out.- There's a sort of patronizing attitude towards Jessica -- too often her superiors call her by her first name Jessica and there isn't a reason for it. Dr. Ailes (one of her superiors) is rapidly cast as a protective father figure and Damian is constantly helping/protecting her.- The other female FBI agent is also patronizingly known by her first name Danielle. The male agents go by their last names and often honorifics (Shannon/Agent Shannon, Dr. Ailes, Dr. Chisholm, Knoll). Perhaps this is the way that Jessica perceives her colleagues though. She bonds instantly to Danielle and keeps everyone else at arms length.- Some of the deduction is really weak. *** SPOILERS AHEAD *** E.g., they have a long discussion about how incidences of twins has gone up due to fertility clinic so lots more twins in the world leading to more separated-at-birth twins who were given up for adoption. But... No one is going to a fertility clinic to have twins just to give them up for adoption. Or you are dealing with an occult killer, 5 occult elements, 3 equidistant locations of murder, and no one considers that there might be 2 more locations that will make a star/pentagon? And they have to make some huge deal on figuring out where the other 2 points are but given an equilateral triangle, anyone with a straight line can draw the rest of the star.I will read more in the series and I hope to see Jessica become smarter, the mysteries become smarter, and a lot more of Damian! His books tend to be a bit quirky, original, slightly over the top but darkly entertaining. This is my second book by this author and I already can't wait to move on to the next.The cast of characters is no less original than the story. There is a serial killer using grand illusions as part of his MO, a former magician, now FBI agent, on the chase and a mysterious and psychopathic man working in the background with ambiguous motivations. Angel Killer is the first book in what is now a series, leaving some threads open at the end that lead into the next book.Andrew Mayne's work is as versatile as the author himself. He is quickly working his way onto my list of top authors.
